Conventions Of A Music Video

In order to make a good music video, you need to include all key conventions. Most successful music videos include all key conventions. I will list and explain below what they are below.

Some music video conventions are:

  • Mise En Scene: Mise en scene is a really important convention. Within mise en scene lots of different things are shown. Scenery, characters clothing, props and the background all come under the category of mise en scene and should be included in a music video. The mise en scene usually relates to the song so we get a clear understanding of whats going on.

  •  Different Camera Shots: Different camera shots are important in music videos as it gives the viewer a good understanding and feel of the video. If there was just one camera shot throughout the whole video it would be bland. Creating different camera shots gives us the emotion of the video and intrigues the viewer into what we are seeing.

  • Camera Movement: Camera movement shows the lip syncing of the music which is very important. It can also create the atmosphere behind the song and keep the viewer interested.

  • Vibrant Atmosphere: A vibrant atmosphere is included in most music videos depending on what type of genre the music is. For example, a youthful pop song would be filmed abroad maybe at a beach or a club and have lots of movement, camera shots and colours. This intrigues the viewer and gives us a good vibe for the song.
